Taking Graphic Novels Seriously

What if you created a graphic novel and no one cared?

Dwight Garner's critical NY Times review of ARE YOU MY MOTHER? was above the fold in yesterday's Arts section.

This is Alison Bechdel's sequel to her previous graphic novel memoir FUN HOME, which came out in 2006. Time Magazine called it the book of the year.

Not just "graphic novel of the year," but better than other 2006 "regular books" by authors such as Cormac McCarthy and Tom Ford.

Trying to look for a silver lining in the dark cloud of yesterday's review, I am glad to see that 6 years on, Ms. Bechdel is taken seriously.

I'll be reading her book and deciding for myself.
